The idea of cleaning face with oil may sound bizarre to you as oil is something you would want to keep away from your skin. But cleansing your face with oil can be considered as a better alternative to cleaning your face with soap and face wash as it will dissolve the dirt on your skin without ripping off the natural oils. If you are unsatisfied with your current skincare regime, using facial oils can be worth a try.

What are its benefits?

Effective make-up remover

Being light-weight, oils serve as excellent make-up removers, and they are gentle enough to remove eye make-up. You can easily remove cosmetics without pulling or tugging. The best part about oil cleaning is that it does not leave any dirt or residue on your skin.

Prevents acne and pimples

You might think that applying oil on your face might lead to acne and pimples. But this may not be true always. If you want to prevent pimple and breakouts, you should give oil cleaning a try. Oils contain healthy fats that prevent skin damage and breakouts. Oils such as olive, almond and castor have anti-inflammatory properties that can highly benefit your skin. According to Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar oils can work well for people with normal to dry skin but not for those who have an existing acne problem.

Exfoliates skin

Well-known dermatologist Dr Sejal Shah told BuzzFeed Life that oils being gentle in nature can be safe to use as an exfoliator. They are an excellent way to scrub and remove dead cells from the skin. Moreover, cleaning your face with oil can lock moisture in your skin, keeping it from becoming flaky and dry. You can also make these exfoliating packs for glowing skin.

Excellent anti-ageing product

Oils are very efficient anti-ageing products. They are free of chemicals and a powerhouse of antioxidants. With age, your body s natural production of oil decreases. Oil cleaning can replenish what you have lost, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Good moisturiser

Oils are an effective facial moisturiser as they won t clog your pores. Oils make your skin more supple and soft and provide a protective layer to keep dirt away. According to BuzzFeed Life, the antioxidants and vitamins in facial oils can dissolve the pore-clogging oils produced by your skin.

So does it suit every skin type?

A good facial oil can, in fact, give you a gorgeous and dewy look. Surprisingly though, oils work well for every skin type, including sensitive, oily and dry skin types. Oiling your skin can be very beneficial for those with eczema and psoriasis. Make sure you massage the oil properly so that it gets well absorbed by your skin.

How to cleanse face with oil?

To clean your face, place a damp, hot washcloth on your face and leave it for twenty seconds. Now massage your face with the oil of your choice and let it settle for thirty seconds. Now again use a hot washcloth to wipe the oil gently away.

Which oil best suits your skin type?

  • If you have normal to dry skin, Dr David E. Bank, Director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, recommends using argan oil as this oil will hydrate your skin without leaving it greasy.
  • For oily skin, you can apply peppermint oil with a bit of castor oil. These oils have astringent-like properties that are great for oily skin.
  • You can also use extra virgin olive oil to clean your face. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins, it can work wonders for your skin. Here is a guide to selecting the best soap for your skin type.
