While you may follow the cleansing, toning and moisturising routine religiously, you need to take extra care if your skin is sensitive. You may unknowingly be ruining the health of your skin with your habits. To help you, we listed out five sensitive skin care mistakes you could be making.

Mistake 1: Using products with fragrances

Products with fragrances can lead to an outbreak or allergy when they come in contact with your skin says dermatologist Dr Kiran Lohia. So opting for fragrance-free products would be your best bet. Also, whenever you try a new formula make sure that you do a patch test first to find out if you are allergic to the product.

Mistake 2: Not wearing sunscreen

UV rays can cause your skin to become more sensitive and damage your skin if you go out in the sun without a sunscreen. Make sure that you do not miss out on spots like the tip of the nose, under eyes, around lips and near the hairline. Here are 11 sunscreen mistakes you must avoid.

Mistake 3: Not moisturising

While it can be difficult to find the right moisturiser for your sensitive skin type, you cannot go without applying a moisturiser. According to beauty expert, Shailaja Rao you must opt for products that are labelled hypoallergenic. Do not purchase products that contain any parabens, alcohol or sulphates. You can also use products that contain mild oils like grapeseed or jojoba as these will leave your skin moisturised without irritating it.

Mistake 4: Using a wrong toner

Using a toner which contains an astringent, alcohol or witch hazel can irritate your skin says Shailaja. So make sure that your toner does not contain any of these ingredients. Also, ensure that your toner does not hurt or sting when you apply it. You can use this DIY green tea toner for clear skin.

Mistake 5: Intense exfoliation

Most of us are in the habit of scrubbing our skin too harshly. This can strip your face of the natural oils along with the dirt and grime and make you more susceptible to rashes. So make sure that you do not rub your skin gently while you exfoliate and don t use an exfoliating scrub more than two times a week.
