Imagine your eye shadow is creasing or sliding and eyeliner transferring to your top lid, how will you feel? The experience is not good but be relieved that it is not just you. Oily eyelids are a common problem and are not directly connected with oily skin issues. You might have normal to dry skin but still experience oily eyelids. Renowned Aesthetician & Cosmetologist and Founder-Director of Bharti Taneja s ALPs, Mrs. Bharti Taneja and Dr. Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr. Trasi's Clinic & La Piel share with us the main causes of oily eyelids and some tips to prevent it:

Causes of oily eyelids:

  • The position of over-active oil glands and the shape of your eyes are the reason you might experience oily eyelids.
  • Hormonal fluctuations can lead to over-production of oil in the skin. Oily eyelids may also occur due to an excessive consumption of fatty and oily foods.
  • Seborrhea in which there is excessive secretion of sebaceous glands from forehead can give rise to oily eyelids.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic endogenous enzyme characterised by erythematous skin lesions over the seborrheic area of face like nose, forehead and nesolabial folds and even eyelids.
  • Other exogenous causes include the excessive application of comedogenic moisturisers, sunscreen and make-up. Read: What your eyes indicate about your health.
  • Washing your face many times in a day can also lead to over secretion of oils in some women. In such a case, plain water can be splashed on the face instead of using cleanser each time. Using mild cleanser can help.
