I am a 26-year old girl and I use foundation regularly. Recently, I developed some breakouts on my face. Could it be because of the make-up? Shall I stop using foundation?
Yes, a few foundations can cause your skin to break out, but that does not mean that you have to forgo your make-up products. Keep a watch on the ingredients in your foundation and say no to it if it contains these ingredients, says cosmetologist Nandita Das.
Artificial colour- The artificial colour present in your cosmetic can cause irritation and lead to a breakout. Look for FD & C in the ingredient list to find out if it has artificial colour.
Lanolin- If you have oily skin, avoid wearing foundation that contains lanolin as it can cause breakouts. It is, however, okay to use lanolin on dry skin. Here are different types of foundation you should use for oily, normal and dry skin.
Mineral oil - Steer clear of any foundation that contains mineral oil. It forms a film on your skin, trapping the bacteria and dead skin cells, giving rise to acne. Also do not use any product that contains petroleum as it will make your skin oily.
Isopropyl myristate- This ingredient can not only make your skin feel greasy but also clog pores and cause irritation.
However, many foundations have been formulated to contain zero pore-clogging ingredients. Some of them also contain soothing anti-acne ingredients which hide and fight acne simultaneously. Look for those with glycolic or salicylic acid. Find out how you can select the right shade of foundation.
