I am a 28-year old girl working in an MNC. Since I have to rush to work early in the morning, I did not get time to apply make-up at home. I travel by bus and at times train and prefer to do wear my make-up while on the go as it is convenient. Can my make-up get contaminated if I apply it when I travel?

Query answered by beauty expert Janet Fernandez.

If you are travelling by public transport, you cannot avoid touching surfaces that countless other hands have touched so if you touch your face with your hands it will automatically get contaminated. Your hands carry numerous bacteria that can result in many skin problems. Ideally, you should wash your hands with an anti-bacterial soap before applying makeup.

But if you are using a clean brush, sponge or applicator it is unlikely that it will get contaminated. Unless there is speed breaker and you accidently touch your hands or poke your eyes out. So if you want to do your makeup in transit, save the trickier moves for the spotlight. If you are travelling with your friend for work avoid passing on your cosmetics and follow the mantra Share your smiles, not your lipsticks!

However, before you come out from home never forget to put essentials like your SPF to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays and your lip balm. Here's you can choose the right sunscreen.

Also, ensure that you keep your makeup brushes clean. Not keeping your brushes clean will lead to them holding bacteria, oil and debris. Brush hairs and sponges are porous, so they hold onto oil and bacteria. If your brushes are dirty, your application will be spotty, and blending will be difficult and moreover dirty brushes can lead to acne and breakouts. Also, follow these beauty tips while travelling.
