During winters, your skin becomes dry and flaky as it gets robbed of its natural moisture. It's your face that goes through maximum damage. One way to combat winter dryness is to lather cold cream on your face. This helps gain lost moisture and make your face soft and supple. However, while restoring the moisture balance cold creams can be little tough on your complexion, making you look pale or dark. Here are 10 other lesser known causes of dry skin.

Why do cold creams steal your complexion?

Cold creams are thick, oil based and greasy in nature. When lathered generously on the face, they help regain lost moisture and fight winter dryness. However, cold creams are not meant to work on your complexion. In fact, if you apply cold cream and set out in the sun, you might look pale and tanned because its oil base attracts more dust and pollutants that form a thin layer on your face. On the other hand, when you wash your face after a while to get rid of grime, you might get back your natural complexion, explains Dr Apritam Goel, cosmetic dermatologist, Cutis Skin Studio, Mumbai. Here are four natural ways to get rid of sunburns at home.

However, continuous application of cold creams during the day, particularly if you are planning to be out in the sun, could be damaging to the skin. The trick is to choose a cream that has a silicone based primer and an acceptable SPF factor (preferably SPF 20+). Usually, a silicon based moisturiser with an SPF factor would be good for your skin while going outdoor during summers, says Dr Goel. Without an SPF factor and their thick oil base, cold creams are bound to make you look pale and tanned. Here is what you need to know about how to pick up the right sunscreen for your skin.

Tips to keep your skin glowing and moistened during winters

To restore moisture in your skin and keep your complexion glowing, follow these tricks:

  • Choose a moisturiser or lotion with an SPF factor for your face and apply it during the day. If your skin becomes dry too often during the day, reapply the lotion after you thoroughly wash and pat dry your face. If you can use a toner before applying your day cream, it would be even better. • Alternatively, try oil massage before your bath. Use an essential oil or a mix of coconut and olive oil to moisturise your face and your entire body. Massage gently on your face till all the oil is absorbed. The best thing about oil massage is that your skin still retains the moisture even after you wash it off while bathing.
  • Keep yourself hydrated enough. Water alone can help you restore the moisture balance in your skin to a great extent.
  • Avoid hot water baths during winters as they rob you of natural moisture, this will make you rub more cold cream on your face and body and the end result would not be very satisfying. Instead opt for lukewarm water baths after a thorough oil massage. Here are 10 common winter mistakes that people make.
