Seba Med Clear Face Care Gel is one of the best moisturisers in the market for acne-prone skin.

If there is one thing that acne sufferers can collectively agree on is that there is a dearth of good moisturisers for the oily skin in the market. Almost everything makes us break out. But wait. If you have oily skin, why would you need a moisturiser? Isn't your skin always hydrated (read oilier than an oil slick)? Wrong! Acne-prone skin can get terribly dry during the winters. And if by any chance you are undergoing treatment for acne (in most cases you are), common anti-acne medication like benzoyl peroxide, retinol, tretinoin, isotretinoin and salicylic acid can make the skin drier than sandpaper. Not until long ago, my favourite pastime was peeling the skin off my chin. And in what seems like the cruellest irony, you'll be battling acne and dry skin at the same time. And the solution for one will end up aggravating the other problem. Read how acne affects your mind.

For the longest time, the only moisturiser I could confidently use was Johnson & Johnson's Clean & Clear. It is a godsend product for acne sufferers that hydrates the skin sufficiently without agitating it. But only until I wasn't on acne medication. Once I started treating my skin with tretinoin, my skin started peeling and flaking at an alarming rate. Even the trusted Clean & Clear couldn't abate the situation. I was pressed for solutions and decided to try out Seba Med Clear Face Care Gel on a limb. It already had rave reviews from other users. Here's what I thought about the gel. Here are some of the best treatment options to get rid of acne.

The packaging

The packaging is classic understated Seba Med style. It's a white tube with a flip top.

The ingredients

What makes Care Gel different from other moisturisers is that it has no emulsifiers or oils and is in the form of a clear gel. When you squeeze out a pea-sized amount, you'd wonder if it could manage any moisturising at all. It also has allantoin and panthenol. Allantoin is used to treat dry, flaky skin and skin irritations. It's a relatively safe ingredient which can also heal acne scars and improve the texture of the skin. It protects the skin, allowing it to regenerate naturally without any interruptions. Panthenol is a form of vitamin B5 and is known to be beneficial for acne-prone skin. It provides hydration and improves healing of the skin. That apart, the gel contains no parabens and is lightly scented.

The price

The price isn't the product's strong point. A 50ml bottle is worth Rs 500.

The review

It's a great moisturiser. You'll be surprised how my scaly skin turned around with just one application. The flaking stopped and so did the eruptions. It also leaves a pleasant glow on your skin. And since it is lightly scented, those with fragrance allergies can go right ahead and buy it.

The verdict

Would I buy it again? At least as long as my acne treatment and the dry winter last. After which, I'll be back to my trusted Clean & Clear. Not because Care Gel is not efficient. It is one of the best moisturisers I have used in a long time. I'll give it a miss next time because it's not easy on the pocket.
