If you are experiencing breakouts, you may just rush to the drug store and get your hands on an over-the-counter treatment. But your make-up could be responsible for that pimple on your chin so unless you correct your make-up you will only get more breakouts. According to dermatologist Dr Sejal Shah, these make-up mistakes could be causing that acne.
You apply too much make-up to cover your acne
Covering your acne with too much foundation can not only delay the healing process but also irritate your skin. A better idea would be to spot treat acne before using any foundation. Also, avoid applying make-up if you have just popped a pimple as it can lead to an infection.
You use the wrong foundation
Certain ingredients in your make-up can clog your pores and help the acne-causing bacteria grow. Pick foundations that are labelled non-comedogenic, miller-based or hypo-allergenic to reduce the risk of skin irritation. Here are a few things you should keep in mind before using make-up.
You use dirty make-up tools to apply make-up
Dirty make-up brushes and tools could be the culprit behind the breakouts on your face. Those damp make-up brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria. Wash your make-up brush at with a shampoo least once a week. Wash your make-up sponges with soap and warm water.
You apply make-up with your fingers
Your fingers carry germs that irritate your skin. So instead of applying make-up with your hands use a make-up brush or a sponge. Also, ensure that you wash the make-up applicators regularly. Here are signs you are using make-up that does not work for you.
You use face wipes to remove make-up
You are not doing enough if you are only using wipes to remove your make-up at night. The dirt and oil trapped underneath heavy make-up increases the chances of a breakout. You need to swap those wipes for dedicated make-up removers to remove the make-up properly. Also, use a gentle cleanser to get rid of the dirt and oil from your face.
