Coconut oil is touted as the magic beauty ingredient for all beauty woes. Many beauty enthusiasts swear by coconut oil for hair care, as a face cleanser and body moisturiser. Many use coconut oil for oil pulling too. But is there something we are missing about coconut oil? Let us hear it from dermatologist Dr Sejal Shah.

Coconut oil may clog your pores

Coconut oil is high on the comedogenic scale. If you are not well-versed with the term know that comedogenically refers to the pore-clogging nature of a substance. So while the improved barrier function of the virgin coconut oil may make it a great option for a moisturiser, raw coconut oil can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. The lauric acid in coconut oil may be held responsible for causing the breakouts. Raw coconut oil can also feel oddly greasy and dry on the skin.

Coconut oil is not a good moisturiser

If you are using coconut oil to moisturise your skin remember that anything that hydrates should have water content. Lotions are hydrating because they contain 70 percent water. But if you are still using coconut oil to moisturise your skin, moisturise it right after washing your face when your skin is damp so that it can lock in moisture. Here's how you can moisturise your face naturally.

Use fractioned coconut oil

If you find yourself breaking out, try applying fractioned coconut oil which is minimally processed. It is also free of lauric-acid which causes all the acne. Give it two weeks for your skin to adjust to the fractioned coconut oil and if it still fails, try applying jojoba oil.

Note-- Also, never use coconut oil as a sunscreen. It is true that coconut oil has some UV rays protective effects but, you should never use it in place of your traditional sunscreen. It has an SPF of around 8, and you should always use a broad-spectrum sunblock with at least SPF 30. Here are 5 times you should never use coconut oil.
