men's skincareIt is not just women who pay attention to their appearances. Men too have joined the brigade to look and feel good when they stare at themselves in the mirror. It is not surprising that they are taking the help of treatments like Botox or lasers to help them get that Greek god-like look. Our films only accentuate the fact further with the leading heroes looking toned as ever, perfectly groomed, and paying keen attention to their public appearances. Celebrity cosmetic dermatologist Dr Shuba Dharmana, lists out popular non-surgical treatments that men opt for these days. Also Read - Botox cousin may reduce prevalence of malaria

Botox: As we age, our skin loses its elasticity which leads to the appearance of frown lines, crow’s feet, wrinkles, droopy smile, etc. These make us look old and factors like smoking, excessive exposure to sunlight, unhealthy diet, less sleep hamper the skin more. Botox is injected into the skin to help relax the muscles temporarily so that the skin appears smooth. Its results usually last for 3-4 months and should be done at regular intervals to keep the signs of ageing at bay. Laser Hair Reduction: Not just women, men too want to get rid of unwanted hair from their chest, back, etc and laser hair removal is a more permanent way of doing so. It takes multiple sittings and the results are quite promising. The hair grows back slowly and is finer than one’s normal growth as it targets the hair follicle. There is no damage caused to any other organ. (Read: Laser hair reduction – all you need to know) Also Read - 4 foods that can trigger rosacea

Body Contouring: Many men struggle with stubborn body fat which doesn’t seem to reduce. They can opt for body contouring procedures. These are non-surgical treatments and the idea is to subject the fat to trauma that helps disrupt the fat cells. This damaged fat is not removed by suction (as in traditional or laser liposuction) – it is left in the body and the body itself clears it away. Commonly targeted areas include – abdomen, love handles, outer and inner thigh, buttocks, upper arms, elbows, claves, back. Vampire Facelift: In this treatment, one’s own blood is drawn out, spinned in a centrifuge and injected back into the skin or used with a dermaroller on the face or scalp. When used on the face, it helps reduce acne scars and promotes collagen build-up and on the scalp, it promotes hair growth. (Read: Beat hair loss with platelet-rich plasma therapy)

Dermal Fillers: Our skin has collagen which keeps it tight and youthful. Mid-thirties onwards, both men and women start losing this supporting structure causing the skin to sag. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid in a very purified form. This is used to build collagen that is lost from the ageing skin thus restoring volume, lifting sagging skin and plumping out the folds. One can treat laughter lines, smoker’s lines, augment the jawline, etc. The hyaluronic acid filler is injected in to the layers of skin, in the folds after numbing the skin with a local anaesthetic cream and the results last up to 1 year. Peels: A pretty popular treatment in men, peels help reduce pigmentation, improve the skin’s texture, remove tan and spots and add a natural glow to the skin. These are solutions that are applied on the skin that leads to peeling or exfoliation of a few layers of the skin. They stimulate regeneration of skin, in effect removing the damaged layer and revealing fresher, brighter skin from within. Depending on the skin’s condition, a course of 6-8 peels may be advised by the doctor. (Read: Skin peels- your answer to acne scars, pigmentation, fine lines and other problems)

Hydrafacial: Men who want quick results can opt for this treatment. It is a liquid skin polishing treatment with no downtime and it instantaneously hydrates the skin, helping you achieve smooth, well-cleansed, hydrated, moisturised skin in a matter of just 15 minutes. It works on all skin types, be it sensitive skin, oily skin, skin prone to acne, blackheads, dryness or ageing skin. Fractional Laser: Men who have oily skin are prone to having open pores, pitting, acne scars, etc. Fractional laser can come in handy for such damages. Even surgical scars can be removed. One will need multiple sittings depending on their skin’s condition. (Read: Peel off years from your face with laser skin resurfacing)
