Curly or very wavy hair is not always easy to style and manage. Considering there are a whole lot of occasions and events lined up, taming curly hair down into straight silky hair at home can be a bit of a challenge. However it's not all that difficult. Here are a few techniques that could save you a trip to the salon and some bucks and most definitely a whole lot of time! These techniques are heat-free as well as using some hairstyling tools.
T- shirt coiling
This technique involves wrapping your hair with a T-shirt and helps you get a natural look for straight hair. You could even sleep over night with your hair wrapped and wake up to a natural sleek look.
It's preferable that your hair is damp for this type of natural straightening.
Gently apply some hair serum or a leave-in conditioner on damp hair before you proceed.
Take equal sections of your hair without twisting it and instead coil them around your head, one after the other. Ensure your hair is held flat on your palm first, and wrap it around your head as much like a wrap.
Use bigger pins or clips vertically to place your hair.
Cover your head with a T-shirt instead of a towel to wrap up your hair for this technique.
Begin opening your hair, section by section and if it still wet, use some fan-drying to dry your hair. You could sleep off with this this over night.
Rollers are usually meant to give your hair that wavy texture but soda can or broad rollers used in the reverse direction can give a straighter look to your hair. You could ditch the straightener completely or use it if you still find your hair curly at some portions. This procedure could be completely heat-free as per your preference.
Steps:
You will require your hair to be damp. If not, fill up a spray bottle with water that you could use while roller setting your hair.
Divide your hair into smaller sections to begin with. Do this by tying your hair into tiny buns all over.
Once you open them up, gently comb out the tangles, if any.
Depending on how straight you want your hair to be, take a broad or a soda can sized roller and begin rolling your hair towards the outer side and upwards.
Pin your hair to the rollers with large hair pins or clips. Leave this to dry for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour.
It's ideal that you let your hair dry naturally but in case you are in a hurry you can use a hair dryer with a diffuser or at the coolest setting. Pull out the curlers gently and remove the clips.
In case you find the inner roots or the hair near your scalp hair still curly, use a heat resistant hair product first and then proceed with the straightening process.
If you want to do away with heated styling products completely then the brush-out technique could be your preference. However, the result may also depend on how curly your hair is.
Steps:
Your hair could be damp for the brush-out technique.
Apply a hair serum or hair cream before you begin styling.
Take your hair section-by-section and brush your hair it straight down. A better way, could also be to brush your hair with a broad roller brush in the opposite direction of your natural curls or waves. Ensure you are not too harsh while doing this or else it will cause your hair to break.
Use a flat brush at last to comb your hair out. Also, use a hair spray to set your hair.
Flat iron straightening
These techniques are definitely natural and heat-free but may be time consuming. However, in such a case you may resort to using a flat iron or the electrical straightener. You can save yourself from the damage caused by exposure to heat with the products you use. A heat protectant, leave-in conditioner or hair cream could come in handy.
Steps:
You have to get done with the basics first, like your regular washing regime.
Once you are done with the washing, apply a hair cream which acts like a leave-in conditioner and handles your hair texture well. You should do this while your hair is wet.
Then, as your hair is damp, use a oil treatment which also serves as a hair serum.
Proceed to drying your hair straight out with a blow-dryer in the coolest setting or use a diffuser, to protect from direct heat.
Once done, apply some heat protection cream, as this would not only shield your hair from the heat but provide it with moisture and reduce chances of your hair looking dull and dry.
Then, tie up your hair in different sections. For instance, let your front layer or bangs be tied right on top into small bun. Similarly. you can cover up the rest of your head into smaller sections.
Open up these sections on by one to straighten them with a a flat iron.
The straightener shouldn't be too close to your scalp as the heat is likely to cause damage. Leave a distance of at least an inch and a half from the roots.
Just drag the straightener towards the outside, from the roots right till the tips. You can direct it slightly inwards at the tips if you don't want your hair looking poker straight. Here are 4 night tricks to style your hair naturally.
