According to maternal and child nutritionist Ramita Kaur, women must include in their diet 'licorice' or 'mulethi' that is packed with many health benefits. She took to Instagram to list some dietary benefits of this wonder ingredient. Read on.
Phytoestrogens: Mulethi contains compounds that mimic the effects of estrogen in the body, known as 'phytoestrogens'. These compounds can help regulate hormonal imbalances, particularly during the menstrual cycle, the nutritionist said.
Anti-inflammatory properties: Mulethi also possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation and discomfort associated with PMS.
Stress reduction: Mulethi helps reduce stress and anxiety, which can worsen PMS symptoms. Lower stress levels can indirectly contribute to hormonal balance, the expert stated.
Hormone regulation: Mulethi also helps regulate the production of hormones like 'cortisol' and 'aldosterone', thereby ensuring hormonal balance.
How To Consume Mulethi
Kaur explained in a video that in order to consume mulethi or licorice, you can take a small mulethi stick and add it to a little bit of boiling water. Next, add 5 gm of misri or rock sugar. Let it boil for 10 minutes. Sieve it and consume this drink on an empty stomach every morning, or 30 minutes after having your lunch.
"This superfood helps in relieving menstrual cramps, balancing hormones, mood swings, depression, insomnia, sweating and hot flashes," said the expert.
