Menstruation

Periods or menstruation is periodic discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus and the vagina. It usually lasts for 4-5 days in a month. The menstrual cycle of an average woman ranges from 21 to 35 days. In adolescent girls, there is a wider variation of 21 to 45 days. The average age for menarche or the onset of menstruation is 12 to 13 years. 

PMS or pre-menstrual syndrome is a common sighting among women. It consists of various physical and emotional sensations before menstruation. Irritability, tiredness, migraines, mood swings and cramps are a few symptoms of PMS. Infrequent periods are not a cause of worry among young girls after menarche, but among adult women should be diagnosed for deficiencies. Extremely heavy flow or absence of any, painful periods, too frequent periods are problems that should consulted with at the earliest.
