Keep your weight in check: Obese or overweight women are prone to suffer from hypertension during pregnancy. If you don’t have high blood pressure during the start of your pregnancy, it is advisable to keep a tab on your weight during pregnancy and restrict yourself to a healthy weight gain of 10 to 12 kg in the course of nine months. Extreme weight gain can be a reason for gestational hypertension during pregnancy.
Keep a tab on your salt intake: The thumb rule should be to have everything in moderation, including table salt. In fact, if you are obese, which is already a risk factor for gestational hypertension, keep a check on your salt intake. Too much consumption of salt leads to water retention in the body and can cause your blood pressure to rise.
Drink eight glasses of water: Sometimes gestational hypertension can lead to swollen hands and feet due to water retention. To get rid of the same it is essential to drink adequate water and flush out the toxins from the body.
Take your prescribed pills: If you have been prescribed pills to control your blood pressure, make sure you are on track with the same. As uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to preeclampsia which can give rise to complications like preterm labour and difficulties during labour and delivery.
Cut down on your vices: Alcohol and tobacco can also lead to gestational hypertension as they are known to cause pressure fluctuations.
Get enough rest: Stress is known to cause problems to the mother and baby and one of the things it can trigger is an onset of gestational hypertension. So get adequate rest and sleep as these two things go a long way in reducing stress levels and can prevent one from suffering from gestational hypertension.
