Vegan has become synonymous with healthy but that does not mean everything vegan is healthy. Even vegan desserts and comfort foods are packed with plenty of calories. So are you swapping your dairy and meat for these deceptively unhealthy vegan foods?
Granola bars: It is the sugar, refined oil and artificial colours and preservatives that are holding the granola bar together. Check the label for listed ingredients like agave, honey and dextrose as these ingredients can score you more sugar than any other ingredient.
Vegan desserts: Vegan desserts can be even worse than their egg and butter containing counterparts. That is because bakers add starch, gums and pectins in vegan desserts, so they end up containing more simple carbohydrates and calories than vegan desserts.
Frozen vegan meals: Even if you are picking a vegan meal, frozen meals are typically filled with preservatives and additives. So it is best that you avoid frozen meals at all times and consume only fresh ones.
Coconut yoghurt: Coconut yoghurt may not be a healthy alternative to dairy yoghurt. A single serving of coconut yoghurt contains a lot of saturated fat with just 1 gram of protein. Most of them found in the stores also contain tons of added sugar.
Veggie chips: You may think you get to sneak in an extra serving of vegetable with veggie chips but you are only mostly consuming potato and corn flour. Processed chips are made from a combination of refined oil, flour, sugar, salt and starch.
