Do you have the tendency to get constipated? While you may load up on bananas to improve your bowel movement, certain things can worsen your constipation, says Dr Ninad Kakde. Make sure you avoid making these mistakes if you want relief.
Drink coffee: While you cannot do without the evening cup of joe, the caffeine in coffee can rob you off the hydration it needs for proper bowel movements. Water can be the best thing to relieve constipation.
Eat processed foods: Processed and refined foods are high in fats that can slow down digestion and lead to constipation. Processed foods like bread and pasta also contain fructans to increase their shelf life that may result in constipation, bloating and gas.
Consume dairy products: The deficiency of the enzyme lactase in the gut to break down the lactose from milk products can lead to constipation and bloating. So avoid dairy products that have high lactose content, like cream, cow’s milk and processed cheese.
Take painkillers: Taking painkillers like ibuprofen on a regular basis can also contribute to constipation. You can always switch to acetaminophen but again always talk to your doctor before making any switch.
Take iron and calcium supplements: Calcium and iron supplements can both slow down the contractions of the gastrointestinal system and lead to constipation. So if you have a medical condition which requires you to take these supplements, you can always ask your physician for alternatives.
Consume laxatives: You might just take a laxative to deal with the number of bathroom visits, but it can just have side effects like constipation. So do not use any laxative more than a week without letting your doctor know.
Skip exercise: No exercise and reduced physical activity is linked to decreased gut movement. So if you are constipated, skipping out your fitness routine will not make you feel any better.
