If you are taking insulin or are on diabetes medications, there are chances that your blood glucose level might fall below 80 mg/dl. And if it happens, what should you do? Well, instead of panicking, you need to eat foods rich in simple sugars to up your glucose level naturally and quickly. Dr Pradeep Gadge, Diabetologist, Shreya Diabetes Centre, Mumbai tells how to up your low glucose levels at home.
Sugar: A quick way to increase the glucose level in the body is to eat sugar. You can eat one teaspoon of sugar granules directly or mix it in half a glass of water and drink it as sugar solution (do not add salt) for an effective result.
Sodas/sweetened beverages: While sweetened beverages are a strict no-no for diabetics, it can act as a saviour if your blood glucose drops below 80 mg/dl. So if you have packaged drinks at home, gulp it down for some relief.
Fruit juices: Another way to up your blood glucose level is to have fruit juices. Do add a teaspoon of sugar for an added effect to get your blood glucose under control.
Honey and sugar: You can even have a tablespoon of a mixture of honey and sugar to make sure your blood glucose level increase. This is because sugar provides you instant energy and glucose and honey exerts an additive effect.
Raisins: You can also eat a handful or two of raisins if you feel your blood glucose has dropped to get it back to normal. Chocolates and biscuits do not have simple sugars and hence and cannot provide instant glucose surge. Eating raisins along with sugar solution can help.
