Stomach acid or gastric acid consists of hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach. The contents in the stomach acid work to kill the harmful bacteria in the system and digest the food. But when your body produces too much stomach acid you can suffer from potential health consequences. Here are some of them according to Dr Ninad Kakde.
Bloating: Bloating is one of the mild symptoms of an acidic gut. Although these symptoms may be considered mild, they can be extremely uncomfortable for someone with an excessive production of stomach acid.
Belching: Excessive acid production in the stomach may potentially also cause excessive gas which may gather in the stomach which in turn may be released as belching and flatulence.
Heartburn: Heartburn is another common symptom of an acidic gut. You may suffer from heartburn along with other symptoms like acidity and gas.
Stomach ulcer: Under normal conditions, the contents of stomach acid protect the lining of the stomach. An excessive production of stomach acid may destroy the lining of the stomach causing stomach ulcers.
Acid reflux: Acid reflux occurs when the contents of the stomach travel backwards through the digestive system into the oesophagus. The more acid and food content you have in your stomach the more likely it is that you will suffer from acid reflux.
