Did you know that in India, the number of cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exceed 12 lakh annually? IBD involves a series of disorders that cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract and knowing about the symptoms can go a long way in the treatment and management of the condition. Dr K K Aggarwal sheds light on the common signs and symptoms of IBD.
Diarrhoea: It is because the inflammation in the digestive tract affects the intestinal cells, which lead to diarrhoea. If this is coupled with a persistent change in your bowel habits, it is a sign to worry.
Fever and fatigue: Fever is one of the first symptoms that indicates something is wrong with the body. However, if you feel fatigued and have high-temperature more often than not along with other symptoms of IBD, do consult a doctor.
Abdominal pain and cramping: Due to diarrhoea and inflammation in the stomach, the person suffering from IBD experiences abdominal pain. In some cases, it can also lead to severe abdominal cramps, just as seen during periods.
Blood in the stool: In more severe cases, you might also experience blood in the stool. Hence, loose stools and abdominal cramps could indicate that your digestive tract is not functioning well and might be a sign of IBD.
Reduced appetite: As the digestive tract is inflamed, there are chances that it might prevent you from eating. Also, eating foods that trigger the inflammation can make things worse. This further causes you to eat less, causing reduced appetite.
Unintended weight loss: Due to low appetite and the severity of inflammation in the body, it can lead to unexplained weight loss. Hence, do not ignore unexplained weight loss as it might be a sign of IBD.
