Most people think that liver damage happens because of excessive alcohol intake and other such vices like smoking. But this is not always true. Some people can suffer from liver diseases even if they are non alcoholic or consume too little alcohol. They may be suffering from a condition called – non-alcoholic fatty liver or NAFLD. In this condition there is too much fat accumulation in the liver leading to liver damage. While this condition is often picked up in an ultrasound, here are some signs of the same.
Abdominal swelling: It is the first prominent symptom and happens due to fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. While there are many reasons for this, NAFLD could be one of them. Since liver plays an important role in detoxifying the body, a dysfunctional liver just makes it difficult for toxins to get rid and hence the fluid accumulation in abdomen.
Enlarged blood vessels: Since toxin build-up happens when the liver functions goes for a toss, blood vessels starts to dilate and enlarge, these blood vessels are prominently visible under the skin and bulging out.
Enlarged breasts in men: While this sign can signify a lot of things, one of them is NAFLD. Men should be doubly vigilant about this sign as it is one of the giveaways.
Enlarged spleen: Spleen does a lot of functions for our body, removes toxins, recycles old blood cells and platelets, stores white blood cells and is also very vulnerable as an organ. An enlarged spleen is a sign that our immune system is in danger as the organ is a crucial part of our lymphatic system. Of the many reasons that can make the spleen enlarged NAFLD is one of them.
Yellowish skin: Jaundice like symptoms of yellowish skin is common with liver diseases and if you are infected with NAFLD it also leads to the same.
