Indian-heart-surgeon-Dr-Devi-ShettySaudi Arabia Monday sought the help of Narayana Hrudayalaya (cardiac hospital) in setting up a telemedicine centre in the kingdom for providing remote healthcare to its citizens. ”The Saudi Arabian government has agreed to extend all facilities in setting up a telemedicine centre at Riyadh for providing immediate medical treatment remotely to its citizens across the desert country,” a hospital spokesman told IANS.

The proposal came up for discussion during a visit of a 40-member Saudi youth delegation Monday to the Narayana Hrudayalaya campus on the city’s outskirts, led by its Deputy Foreign Minister Dr Yousef  Bin Trad Alsaadon. ”The minister and the youth evinced keen interest in the satellite-based technology and promised to come up with a proposal soon for opening the first telemedicine centre in the kingdom in collaboration with our hospital,” the spokesman said.

As a pioneer in using telecommunications and information technologies to provide clinical healthcare remotely, the privately-run super-specialty cardiac hospital uses telemedicine to administer affordable medical treatment in distant areas across India and overseas spanning the sub-Saharan countries in Africa and in south east Asian region.”Exposure to the working of telemedicine at our facility and its multiple benefits impressed the medical students in the delegation and the Prince (minister) who discussed its modus operandi with out chairman Devi Prasad Shetty during an interactive session,” the official mentioned.

The youth delegation also went around the hospital’s sprawling healthcity and had a firsthand account of its paediatric facility where children, including infants, are treated for cardiac ailments. ”At the paediatric ward, the Saudi youth interacted with doctors, house surgeons, nurses and some young patients and enquired about the facilities and the nature of treatment given for heart ailments,” the spokesman said.  The youth are on a 10-day forum visit to India since March 22 to promote bilateral relations in the field of science and technology and for a firsthand account of the developments made by Indian institutes and universities.

Bandwidth in West Africa can be a tricky porlbem. There are several submarine cable systems in operation, however physical failure [ usually caused by fishermen pulling up the cable in their nets and then cutting it is fairly common ]. Some have dual ring systems similar to the old FDDI systems, but not all. I have seen several cases where a major cable has been cut and there has been no back up for whatever reason. Even with systems with a back-up cable, the high priority customers usually get put on first. Due to the fact that the back-up system is sometimes also carrying regular traffic [ prior to the main cable break ], some people simply have to wait for the cable repair ship to show up. This can result in outages of weeks. On the satellite side, I presume you are using a gyro-stabilized maritime satellite sytem when you are underway, and the same when you are tied up at the docks ?I don’t know what size of antenna you have on the ship, but have you thought of installing a larger VSAT antenna [ non-gyro stabilized ] ? There are plenty of systems out there that have good AZ/EL ranges for when the ship is parked. Provided you get a spacecraft that is not in inclined orbit operation, you may only have to manually re-point a couple of times a day [ or once a week for some ]. I am assuming that the big ship you have is fairly stable when docked and there is not much yaw/pitch/roll whilst at the side of the dock. There are a large number of space segment operators in Africa. Have you contacted all of them ? There are obviously a large number of factors to consider – are you downlinking in the US first or are you landing elsewhere and then going via [ reliable ] transatlantic cable to the States ? You can shop around for satellite bandwidth and make deals just like you would with anything else. Have you contacted the CEO’s of the space segment operators [ personally contacted them I mean ? ]. You should produce a small video presentation and send it to them. Most of the time, the people who are in charge of selling the space segment capacity are only interested in money. If you can get the attention of the CEO, he may help you with a price deal [ this will also depend on the amount of time that you lease the space segment for ].So, how do you get in touch with a CEO ? There are a lot of methods. Firstly, when you send a piece of physical mail to a CEO, the chances of him actually receiving it are almost zero. Some underling will intercept it and they will “decide” what to do with it.If you send an envelope, do not put your company’s address on the top. Just put the CEO’s name and his address. Then write across the top “For The Personal Attention Of . When his secretary receives it, she will now be a bit more reluctant to open it, as it could be mail from a lawyer etc etc.It doesn’t work all the time, as some PA’s have caught onto this, but I’ve used it successfully on two occasions. You have to think outside the box with this sort of stuff. Conventional methods often do not work.Have you contacted your Congressman or Senator to see what he can do ?Have you contacted the International Red Cross and the UN to see if they have any suggestions ?Have you contacted CNN to see if you can get some publicity ?There are a ton of other things you can do to get price reductions. When I took my first steps after six months in bed, I swore that I would do whatever it took to get help for the guys who had been crippled after coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. Many people think “Oh these guys have received great care and modern medicine is looking after them”. Some of these fellows have received such horrific injuries that they would have died in WW2 and Korea. Fast transport and new techniques have saved many lives, but the result for many is that even though their lives have been saved, they are living with horrible pain. They are a forgotten group. They get treated in Frankfurt and Walter Reed and are amongst their buddies. Morale is high there. Then they get sent home to live with their folks. They are away from their buddies and depression and alcoholism set in for many. We do not see these boys coming off the planes on TV each day, but we should to remind us of what they have sacrificed. I called Walter Reed Army Hospital non-stop for three months the day after I started walking. Nobody was interested. Finally we found a wonderful politician who has been helping to get these new technologies introduced into the VA. A bunch of Navy SEALS are now back on active duty due to this stuff. You have to fight to get people to listen. Good Luck to you in your endeavours. Dave

Dr Shetty is a classic example of showing the goodness in humanity. I am so delighted to watch the series on Al Jazeera called the Indian Hospitals, on 101 East.
Keep up the good work, you are making us proud .
Wish you all the success, and hope a Hospital is open in Gujarat shortly. My friends have nasty experiences there.

Its was very important to depict this image of doctors before Indian public, govt. and ultimately doctors who are like keys of society.Any person gets helpless if doctor doesn’t help its society.Although I am a Medical Representative and really when I joined this humble profession I started hating doctors but ultimately one has to do his job. I request you to promote generic drugs and some laws should be made to stop under the table give and takes. I further request for one more thing about the corruption which the ministers are making blindly. Thanks and Regards.
